Breuddwyd y Seintiau

Gan ddilyn patrwm blynyddol bellach, mae'r Seintiau Newydd (dwi o hydyn mynnu eu galw'n TNS), yn ein cynyrchioli yng Nghynghrair y Pencampwyr. Fel y soniais eisoes, mae'n gymal anodd i ddod drosti, yn enwedig wrth ystyried mai llond dwrn o gemau cyfeillgar sydd ganddynt fel paratoad.
Er hynny, faint o Wledydd yn Ewrop sydd ddim yn talu sylw Teledu o gwbl i'w cynyrchiolwyr yng Nghwpan pwysicaf y Cyfandir? Er ychydig syndod i chwi oll mae'n debyg, mae Cymru ymysg y rheiny. Cefais gyfle i daro ebost i Nigel Walker, sef pennaeth Chwaraeon BBC Cymru ynglyn a'r anghyfiawner yma, a dyma dranscript ohono.

"I am emailing you to describe my dissapointment to find out there will be no coverage of our Welsh Football representatives in European competition (again) this year. I am not a supporter of any of the clubs in question (namely, TNS, Carmarthen and Rhyl), however it must be questioned why these games are not being broadcast in any way, shape or form. ITV Sport and other Terrestrial channels pay millions to secure the rights to broadcast English and Scottish clubs in Europe, and RTE in Ireland will be broadcasting Derry City's adventures in Europe.

However, why is it that a Public service Broadcaster such as the BBC fail to see that they have as much an obligation to show Welsh Clubs represent us, as they do, to attempt to secure Welsh National Team coverage. Unfortunately, the BBC were unsuccesful in the latter, but in the former, there is no excuse as far as I can see.

BBC Wales will not be providing live coverage of the Welsh Premier clubs’ matches in the first qualifying rounds of the Champions League and the UEFA Cup.

We recognise and understand the disappointment surrounding this decision. As you may know, in past years BBC Wales has broadcast selective television coverage of Welsh Premier teams in Europe and this will continue to be our policy. Many factors are taken into consideration including scheduling, attractiveness of the tie, sequence of the legs and, of course, cost before arriving at a decision and on this occasion it was decided not to broadcast the matches on television. However, this will not diminish our interest in the clubs’ progress. We intend to dedicate coverage to the fixtures on our news, radio and new media services.

BBC Wales remains committed to football in Wales at all levels. Wales' away football internationals frequently feature on BBC Wales with both San Marino v Wales and Germany v Wales to be televised in the Autumn (rights for Wales' home matches rest with Sky). We provide weekly coverage on Sportstime and The Back Page on Radio Wales and Camp Lawn on Radio Cymru. We are also responsible for the production of Y Clwb Pel-droed on S4C and our websites in English and Welsh carry extensive coverage of football every day of the week.
